Beaver Creek History
Beaver Creek has a very rich history. Settled in 1865, the town of Beaver Creek. It was tucked away in the Colorado Rocky Mountains for many years. President Abraham Lincoln’s Homestead Act (1862) caused many early pioneers to move to Beaver Creek, farming hay and raising cattle to feed local miners located near them. The first few settlers in the town were husband and wife George and Allie Townsend. Due to the location as well as the possible presence of beavers in the area, the place was later called Beaver Creek. The Townsends were dubbed as the first ever family to reside in town.
For many years, Beaver Creek was a lightly populated farming area. It took many decades before becoming public, finally opening to the public in the 1980s.
In the 1950s, a new family dominated the land, the Nottinghams. They were a very hardworking and dedicated family. In 1956, Pete Seibert asked the family if he could buy Beaver Creek, he was a member of the 10th Mountain Division and an elite ski trooper. Seibert saw the potential of the land and saw it was perfect for skiing, but the family refused. However, eventually, Nottinghams gave in in 1980 because of Seibert’s persistence. The quick growth of the town was very impressive. It began as family-owned land where two hardworking families lived their legacies and grew into a successful and popular location.
Beaver Creek slowly started to become populated with the development of I70 through the Colorado Rocky Mountains, it became a lot easier to access the mountain peaks. The Rockies had gorgeous fluffy snow and were perfect for snow sports.
In 1970, Colorado was chosen as the location to host the Winter Olympics of 1976. Originally Beaver Creek was planned to help host the 1976 Winter Olympics. The planning to construct Beaver Creek to host the alpine event was done by the Olympics. But Coloradans voted against the Olympic event by a margin of three to two. Voters feared the environmental consequences, and hurried development, and had many concerns with transportation. They also saw the Vail Ski Resort as a much better location. Many new developments began in environmental policy, like the amendments to the Clean Water Act and the National Environmental Protection Act of 1970. Which gave even more opponents towards the development of the Beaver Creek Resort. With all the chaos and protesting happening because of the planning of the Winter Olympics, Colorado had to make a crazy decision. In 1972, two years after the International Olympic Committee had awarded the Games, Denver turned down the Games and the IOC had to find another host, which ended up being Innsbruck, Austria. Colorado was the first place ever to turn down the Olympics.
After a couple of years since the chaos of the Winter Olympics, the construction of Beaver Creek started in 1977. Beaver Creek opened on December 15, 1980, with 6 Doppelmayr chair lifts and a temporary base lodge. Former President Ford was at the opening ceremony. The costs for the building and organizing of this area were around 300 million dollars. The Larkspur Bowl opened the following ski season, which supplied skiers with mogul runs and a wide open terrain. Over years Beaver Creek invested in better and nicer high-speed lift technology. Such as the new Doppelmayr lift and named it the Centennial Express.
The Charter at Beaver Creek was the first ski slope and hotel property, opened during the 1980–81 ski season. The Charter is still located in Beaver Creek and you can still stay there. After The Charter was opened the Beaver Creek Golf Club was opened in 1982. The Golf Course was designed by noted course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The Beaver Creek Golf Club is one of the longest established golf courses in the Vail Valley, nestled against the slopes of Beaver Creek Mountain. The course is known for its long and narrow challenging fairways, and its stunning scenery. In addition to golf, tennis courts were also added to Beaver Creek and hosted tennis greats like Jimmy Connors at its Legends of Tennis event. Martina Navratilova, who is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time, visited Beaver Creek and swapped the tennis racket for skis in the American Ski Classic.
In 1989, the World Ski Championship came to Beaver Creek. This was the first time the resort attracted a major racing event since its loss of the Olympic bid. After the failed Olympic bid in the ’70s, both Beaver Creek and Vail Ski Resorts hosted the world’s premier downhill skiing competition—the International Ski Federation’s Alpine World Ski Championships—in 1989. This Championship helped Beaver Creek leave an amazing impression worldwide but especially in Europe.
During the 1990s Beaver Creek continued to upgrade their lifts and expand new terrain. In 1991, Grouse Mountain opened, which included the addition of a CTEC high-speed quad chair. Another quad chair and new ski-in houses were added with The Bachelor Gulch development in 1997. Bachelor Gulch was an enclave in Beaver Creek Resort. It’s located on the western shoulder of Beaver Creek Resort with phenomenal views of the Vail Valley. In 1997, Beaver Creek also connected with the Arrowhead Ski Area. Which was originally purchased during the 1993 season.
The history of Beaver Creek is so unique and different. Beaver Creek started only as a farming and ranching location and with the success of a small family, it had grown and become so successful. Beaver Creek has been sculpted into the perfect snow village that was the perfect mix of cozy and luxurious.

The drive from DIA to Beaver Creek via Interstate 70 is gorgeous and shows a phenomenal view of the Rocky Mountains.

Weather and temperatures in Beaver Creek vary drastically depending on the season. Choosing the correct season can be very important when traveling to Beaver Creek. The temperature can vary from 20℉ to 75℉. Temperatures feel cold for about half of the year, and then nice with a fair chance of precipitation about half of the year.
Spring usually starts around the end of April with the average high temperature topping out around 39°F and the low bottoming out around 17°F. April is the one of wettest months of the year with 110 mm (4.3in) of rainfall. There are around five days of rainfall, 14 dry days, and 11 snow days in April. Beaver Creek receives around 30 inches of snow during April, but as May comes temperatures increase and there isn’t as much snowfall. The average high is 50° in May in Beaver Creek and the low average is around 27° degrees. May has around three days of rainfall with a total of 5.9 inches and five days of snow. The other 23 days will be dry. May is cold with a gentle breeze. The weather in May does not have as much snow or heat, so you can’t find as many activities as you normally would.
Summer in Beaver Creek begins in June with the high averaging around 70°F and lows averaging around 37°F. Summer activities like hiking and golfing open in the middle of June and close towards the middle of September. July and August are the hottest months with the average being over 75°F.
October is when temperatures begin to cool off, transitioning from an average of 65°F to 52°F.
The average high in October is 51°F and the average low is 26°F. Even though fall is short, the cool weather is perfect for tons of activities. The aspens and hillsides become gorgeous as they change from green to gold. During October, there are tons of fun festivals to get you into the fall mood like the Fall Harvest and the Oktoberfest.
After a short fall season, winter quickly sets in during the middle to end of November. Average highs in November are around 36°F with lows dipping into the 16°F range. During this time, lots of snowfall occurs and lasts till the end of April.
How to get to Beaver Creek
The easiest way to get to Beaver Creek is to fly into Denver International Airport (DIA). From there, you can rent a car, take a public shuttle, or charter a private shuttle to take you from the airport to Beaver Creek.
Driving times from DIA to Beaver Creek can vary. Snow, construction, and traffic all play a large factor in how long the drive will take. The total distance between DIA and Beaver Creek is about 133 miles along I-70. On a good day, it takes approximately 2h 25m to drive from Denver Airport (DEN) to Beaver Creek.
Another way to get to Beaver Creek is by flying into Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) located in Gypsum, Colorado. Gypsum lies about 23 miles from Beaver Creek. Similar options exist for getting from the airport to town, including car rentals, public shuttles, and private shuttles. Keep in mind, when traveling during winter many roads can get closed due to the heavy snowfall.

Summer lasts around four months in Beaver Creek, but the best months to visit are from July to the middle of August. There will be no snow, and you’ll find plenty of bike trails and hikes. There is also a beautiful lake nearby called Nottingham. The weather will be in the low seventies.
The best time to visit Beaver Creek during the winter is between January and February. By this time of year, the resort will have received a healthy base layer of snow, meaning that most of the ski runs and lifts will be open. If you are planning to ski, the best time to dodge crowds during the high season is early to mid-January. Nottingham Park
Nottingham Park is located in Avon, but it’s around a 10-minute drive from Beaver Creek. This park has a lake, a performance pavilion, a playground, and a small outdoor gym. Beaver Creek lift ticket prices vary depending on the day that you plan on skiing as well as the number of days you plan on skiing. Ski rentals can be made at Beaver Creek Ski Resort in advance of your trip or on the day of. We highly recommend that you reserve your rentals well in advance of your journey though, as many people end up renting from the resort.
Rental costs vary based on the type of skis you want to use. There are options for beginners, intermediates, and advanced skiers. When you go to reserve your rentals, you’ll be able to indicate what level of skier you are to help the ski technician quickly set you up with the right set of skis for the day.
