Winter is coming once again, and the high mountains and a cozy environment are one of the most popular destinations for ski lovers.

Whether you are looking for a weekend getaway to the snow or a skiing holiday, here are the most popular Must-See ski resorts in Colorado.

1. Vail Ski Resort

Vail is a town in west-central Colorado, located in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver. It was founded as a resort in 1962 and built in the style of an Alpine villa. The ski terrain around Vail Mountain stretches for 39 km2, making Vail the largest ski resort in the United States. This ski resort is unique for the combination of terrain, high-speed ski lifts, gourmet cuisine, shopping, nightlife, and a first-class atmosphere.

The Vail mountains have been rated the No. 1 ski resort for several years due to its extensive terrain that can lodge the different level skiers (beginners and experts). The mountain is about 2140 hectares, including the “Front Side” and the legendary “Back Bowls” and “Blue Sky Basin.” Regardless of the weather, there is always something nice about the environment which makes people troop in here every year.

Vail Ski Resort in Colorado is where most of the action happens. Just over 9 meters (370 inches) of snow covers the area each year, so the weather and the snow are ideal for skiing. Head to the Back Bowls to enjoy the open spaces, visit the trails and meadows of the Blue Sky Basin, or take advantage of night skiing or helicopter skiing opportunities.

2. Aspen Snowmass Ski Resort

Located in the Midwest of the state of Colorado, this city has become synonymous with everything that has to do with this winter sport. One of the reasons for its good reputation is the perfection of the snow found in all its ski resorts.

Aspen’s snowy perfection is due to the nearest ocean masses being thousands of miles away. This makes the relative humidity of the air much lower compared to those recorded by stations in other regions of the globe. As if that were not enough, they are surrounded by huge deserts and semi-desert extensions, which ‘dry’ the air even more.

The proximity to the polar regions does the rest: a cold and dry climate like few others; ideal conditions so that there is snow in abundance and does not freeze. The incredible mountain scenery and the famous ski slopes are the features of most significant interest to many tourists traveling to Aspen.

Snowmass Village is a destination that tourists like for the incredible mountain scenery, the variety of places to eat, and the stunning ski slopes.

3. Beaver Creek Ski Resort

Beaver Creek is a private mountain resort for those who want an elegant and exclusive experience. This luxurious ski destination is located in a European-style base town with Neo Tyrolean-style buildings and heated corridors. Discover the 734 hectares (1,815 acres) of ski slopes, visit the art galleries in town and have fun on the panoramic golf course.

Explore the elegant walking town of Beaver Creek, where heated corridors and escalators connect restaurants, shops, and other facilities.

Enjoy one of the chocolate chip cookies that are baked every afternoon. It has beautiful bronze sculptures located in different parts of the town, and you can enjoy a good meal on the terrace of a restaurant while taking in the panoramic view. The Beaver Creek Ski Area is family-friendly, with more than 149 ski trails and 17 chair lifts. Use the ski lifts and cable cars to access the scenic hiking and biking trails in this area during summer.

The Beaver Creek Mountain slopes are connected to the Bachelor Gulch slopes, which are equally well-groomed and connect to Arrowhead. The result is a fabulous ski experience with interconnected European-style villages. Head to one of the three terrain parks to snowboard, or take on the challenge of the Stone Creek Slides, where the steepest slopes of the ski resort are found. Activities include snow sports competitions, cooking demonstrations, a rodeo, arts festivals, and an Oktoberfest celebration.

4. Breckenridge Ski Resort

Every year during December, the Dew Tour competitions are held, where you can see some of the best athletes in the country in action.

5. Keystone Ski Resort

The Keystone Ski Resort is known as one of the best family ski resorts in the area. Although the resort has several slopes for beginners and intermediate skiers, it also has a great variety of extreme slopes.

During spring, you can ski on the illuminated slopes at night. The station tracks are spread over three different peaks: Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and the ridge between Outback and Wapiti Peak. The peaks are connected by a system of ski lifts and cable cars. Head to Dercum Mountain to ski in the quietest area of the resort, ideal for the family. Reach the top using the high-speed ski lifts, the River Run Cable Car, or take a ride in a heated snowmobile.

Another option is to take the cable car from Outpost. Outback is purposely kept naturally, with groves spaced far enough for beginning skiers to practice on open terrain. Some parts of the ski resort are reserved for expert skiers.

Keystone’s A51 Park is one of the best in the country, with more than 100 attractions spread across 24 hectares of land.
In the resort town, you will find a variety of accommodations, both cheap and luxurious. Indulge yourself with a therapeutic massage in the spa.
Denver International Airport to Colorado Ski resorts

When you are planning a trip out of town, figuring out how you are going to get around can seem complicated. If you are driving to your holiday spot from your home, your car problem is taken care of. If you are taking a plane or some other sort of public transportation to your holiday spot, you will need to figure out how to get to your location and how to travel around your location while you are there. This isn’t overly complicated, but renting a car can add a significant cost to your trip. When you are traveling somewhere like a Colorado ski resort, transportation, while you are at the resort is often unnecessary. Resorts often have trolley service included and many of the necessary areas are easily walkable or accessible on foot. So, paying for a rental car for a whole week when you really only need it for the trip to and from the airport feels unnecessary and overpriced.

When traveling to Colorado ski resorts, many visitors opt for a one way ride to their resort and then a one way ride back to the airport from their resort. Depending on your resort and what you have access to while you are there, having a car for the full week is frivolous and you can save plenty of money just opting to use the transportation provided at your resort. So, since many resorts have easily accessible buses or trolleys to move around the resort property, what should visitors use as their transportation to and from the airport? Denver offers plenty of options.

Private Shuttles

While Denver offers a wide array of public transportation options from the Denver International Airport to the variety of ski resorts, with those you have to follow a schedule. Also with public transportation, there is no guarantee that there will be room for you, your gear, and your entire party. The trip may take significantly longer than it should. These public transportation options often have a significant amount of stops they must make, so what would be an hour trip could be multiple hours long.

When you plan a trip like this, you often have a large amount of gear and luggage, so having transportation that is perfectly geared to you, your needs, and your schedule is ideal. With a private shuttle, there is no need to dread arriving at the airport four hours early just because the public transport only makes one or two trips during the day.

With the museums, breweries, art scenes, recreational activities, and ambiance of old-fashioned feeling, Fort Collins is a destination you would love to visit again.

Brief History of Fort Collins

Fort Collins has a lot of interesting things to offer, however, it is more interesting when you understand the historical background of this famous location in Colorado. It has richly witnessed the real history and lives of Native Americans. This area used to be home to many Native Americans and their various cultural lives. Some of these notable tribes include Arapaho, Cheyenne, and Comanche.

The area which is now Fort Collins has been the traditional homeland of many Native American cultural groups, including the tribes today known as the Ute, Comanche, Cheyenne, and Arapaho. However, when European-Americans started relocating towards the west, many of these tribes were extinct either as a result of disease or land encroachment in northern Colorado. After the massacres of Native Americans in the 1860s in the war between US encroachment and an alliance of Native American many of these tribes left the area. While some were forced to live in other states.

Fort Collins itself came into existence in 1864, originally as a military fort, and was known as Camp Collins named after a Union Calvary officer Lt. Col. William Oliver Collins. The purpose of the camp was to serve as protection for the Overland Trail (the Native American hunting and traveling routes turned into wagon trails for people traveling west) in Colorado. However, the Camp got washed away during a flood and another fort (currently Old Town Fort Collins) was built higher to help escape flooding.

European-Americans started settling in the area the same year, Old Town Fort Collins was built. One of these settlers includes Elizabeth Stone a 64-year known as Auntie Stone. She was the only European-American woman in Old Town Fort Collins throughout that year. She pioneered many things in the area, some of them including a mess hall, hotel, grit mill, and brickyard. Auntie Stones is regarded as the founding mother of the fort as she helped start the first school, fought for women’s rights, and encourage other European-American settlers to move into the city. This same area with a rich background history has become a cynosure of the eye for people who comes around every day to behold this wonder birthed in history. In this article, we will talk about some amazing things you can do and great places to visit while in Fort Collins.

Brewery Hop

You cannot completely talk about Fort Collins without mentioning its breweries. This area hosts many breweries, you will find both the bigger and smaller ones depending on your choice. Also, keep in mind breweries are not hard to come by here, they are all around you.

As I said, there are several breweries available, however, these three are some of the bigger ones you should visit.

Odell Brewing: With their food trucks, outdoor live music coupled with their fantastic beer. This might be the best brewery in Fort Collins.

New Belgium: This bar has enough delicious beers to fill your stomach. They are not only about drinks; they also host different events. One of the events is Tour de Fat, drunk people are dressed in costumes on their bikes to the bars while the roads around the place are closed. You will surely have fun if you participate in this event. You can also look forward to drinking their Fat Tire Amber ale.

Prost Brewing: A German-inspired brewery with a range of light and dark beers. You can try their Dunkel, Helles, and the giant pretzel. You will fall in love with this brewery.

Downtown Fort Collins

This is also known as Old Town Fort Collins; this is a center of interest and attraction for tourists visiting Fort Collins. And it is important you don’t miss out on this experience too. It brings you closer to history as it still features some of the old architecture from the past. You are sure to have an old-fashioned feeling, and also it has inspired many present-day designs like Disney Main Street.

You can access a lot of Fort Collins attractions downtown. This includes Old Town Square where you can find many boutiques, cafes, galleries, museums, and shops. You can decide to tour this personally or use a tour guide.

Fort fun

This is one of the best entertainment destinations in Fort Fun. It is home to many attractions, some of which include Escape rooms, Go-karts, and Mini golf. Most of them will be seen scattered across the indoors and outdoors of the complex.
Central Colorado is known for its skiing and outdoor activity. The resorts in this area of the Rockies offer the perfect opportunity for visitors to sleep, eat, and relax where they want to explore. The convenience of these resorts being so close to the mountains offers an almost seamless ski and outdoor experience. If you are planning on visiting Keystone or are trying to decide which resort may be the best fit for you or your group, there is plenty of need-to-know information about Keystone, Colorado:

General Information about Keystone

Keystone History

While a portion of the acreage of Keystone was originally purchased in 1941, the portion for the original ski area was not acquired until 1967. The vision of what the area would become was in the works for decades after the original purchase in the 1940s, but the ski resort did not open until 1970.

During that first year, the rookie ski resort had over 70,000 visitors who were able to purchase ski tickets for an incredibly reasonable price of $5. Most people could ski year-round if prices were still that low! With such an incredible first year, Keystone was able to quickly expand upon its original ski area and amenities. Keystone was the first resort in Colorado to install a snowmaking system! Ralston Purina, a St. Louis company best known for animal and pet food, purchased the area in 1974. They began working on a massive expansion plan. This included the Keystone Ranch Golf Course, which opened in 1980, and the first Keystone Gondola which was installed in 1984. Once mountainside lighting was incorporated in 1985, the resort was able to begin offering tickets for night skiing.

Over the last three decades, new runs, gondolas, lifts, a conference center, and much more has been added as Keystone has continued to grow. Keystone was merged with Vail, Breckenridge, and Beaver Creek to create the largest resort group in the United States, Vail Resorts. Keystone continues to expand and is considered one of the most accessible ski areas in Colorado because of its wide range of terrain appropriate for every skill level.

Keystone Map

Weather in Keystone

Winter (December-March) – The average temperature in winter in Keystone is 31 degrees Fahrenheit on the high end and 12 degrees Fahrenheit on the lower end. There are days during these months that can be both colder and warmer. Snowfall is heaviest during this time and these months are usually cloudy. There will be sunny days, but winter is dominated by clouds.

Spring (March – June) – The beginning of spring will still include a decent amount of snow with an average high of around 50 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of around 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Early spring will continue to be cloudy and will clear up as you move closer to June.

Summer (June-September) – The average high during summertime is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit and the low is typically around 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The clouds begin dissipating during these months and will continue to do so through early Autumn. This is the warmest time of the year but is still extremely pleasant most of the time.

Autumn (September – November) – Autumn continues to be an extremely clear portion of the year and the average temperatures land around 50 degrees Fahrenheit for a high and 30 degrees Fahrenheit for a low. Just like in summer and late spring, this is the perfect time to take advantage of all of Keystone’s non-skiing activities.

How to Get to Keystone

Flying into Denver

Most visitors of ski resorts and other attractions in central Colorado fly into Denver International Airport because of its easy access to transportation that can get you to and from the areas of the state that you hope to visit. Keystone is about a 1.5-hour drive away from Denver or a little over 75 miles. If you are looking for a more budget-friendly way to get from Denver to Keystone, there is public transportation available. This bus is not a straight shot to Keystone and will typically take you around three hours. This round trip is usually around $26 and to begin, you must take the Denver Airport Rail to Denver Union Station. This trip is around 37 minutes long. Once you arrive at Union Station, the bus can take you on to Arapahoe Basin and then on to River Run. From River Run, you can choose to walk for around 15 minutes or arrange to stay at River Run, which is at the base of Keystone Resort.

If you have a little more in your budget for transportation and are flying into Denver, there are companies that can shuttle you to and from the resorts in the Rocky Mountains. Colorado Mountain Express is one of these and round-trip tickets are around $70 depending on the time of year. Children under 12 are half the price of the adult ticket. This company runs several shuttles throughout the day and the travel time is around 2.5 hours. These shuttles can drop patrons off at their hotels, condos, and rental homes. If private transportation is what you are after and you have even more in your budget, private car and van service can help you out. This is especially convenient if you have a large group. Colorado Mountain Express offers private cars. Uber, taxis, and Lyft are other options if you are looking for private transportation, but you need to be mindful of how much gear you are bringing. Car rentals are another direct and efficient option, but parking prices, once you get to Keystone, are something to keep in mind. You do not need the car once you arrive in Keystone as they have a free bus service, so your rental will likely sit in a parking lot the entire time unless you plan on making day trips outside of the resort.

Flying into Eagle

Eagle County Regional Airport is another location that visitors have the option of flying into, but it is often more expensive and the drive from this airport to Keystone is around the same as Denver (1.5 hours). Uber and Lyft are not available at this airport, so an inexpensive method of getting to Keystone takes several steps. There is a public bus that can take you directly from Eagle Airport to the Vail transportation center in about an hour. This ticket is usually under $10. From the Vail Transportation center, you can take a bus, but that trip is usually around 2 hours. Taking a taxi or shuttle from Vail transportation center is also an option. If you are looking for something more direct, shuttles and private services are available for nonstop trips. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time. Rental cars are available for pickup, but cars are not necessary for Keystone, and parking will add up and take up a portion of your budget.

Driving

If you are driving to Keystone from Denver or the eastern part of Colorado, you will take I-70 W for the bulk of the drive and then US-6 to Keystone Gulch Rd. If you are driving towards Keystone from the western part of Colorado, you will take I-70 east the bulk of the way and then follow US-6 to Keystone Gulch Road.

Best Time to Visit Keystone

The best time to visit Keystone, CO depends on what type of adventure you are looking for. If snow quality ranks high on your list, Keystone does not receive quite as much snow as other Colorado resorts in its direct vicinity, but there is still plenty of coverage to go around. By mid to late January and through March, there is plenty of snow on the ground to accomplish all of the skiing adventures you are after. The best time to visit for snow and skiing is from around mid-February to mid-March.

If you are wanting to visit Keystone during peak season and avoid larger crowds, the best time would be during the week. Local skiers head over to the slopes on Saturdays and the crowds can get high. Keystone does not have Blackout days for local skiers, so Keystone along with Breckenridge is where locals typically find themselves on the weekends. Avoiding resorts along I-70 on Saturdays is a good idea if you are not wanting to get swallowed by large crowds.

If you are looking for the most budget-friendly time to visit Keystone that isn’t during the summer, late January and late March are typically cheaper than February. Lodging, flights, and activities will be cheaper during this time. Keystone is one of the cheaper resorts on the Colorado Epic Pass, so you are going to have a much more budget-friendly vacation if you are heading to Keystone anyways. Lodging, food, and shopping are all less pricey in Keystone than in other resorts in central Colorado.

Places to Visit in Keystone and Activities to Do in Keystone
